“Make Power Clean” Initiative Aims To Promote Cleaner European Electricity Market

Thirteen leading companies across Europe launched a new power initiative “Make Power Clean” this Monday. The group, consisting of companies such as Shell, Siemens and Statoil, has set out a goal of ensuring that the future of the European power market is consistent with the EU climate commitments. The group said the following in a letter to the European Parliament:

"Europe’s electricity market design needs to be fully consistent with the EU climate strategy"

Dear Dr. Kariņš, dear Members of the European Parliament,

Ahead of the ITRE Committee’s first exchange of views on the reform of the Electricity Market Design, we would like to bring to your attention the need to ensure consistency between the new legislation and the EU energy and climate policy. The Commission’s proposal for a carbon eligibility criterion in the Regulation on the Internal Market for Electricity1 is a step in the right direction, which we encourage you to support.
