Greening cheese production a brie-ze with biogas

Wednesday, 12 May 2021

Hilmar Cheese Company, one of the world’s largest producers of US-style cheese and whey products, is planning to construct a new state-of-the-art processing plant in Dodge City, Kansas, where biogas will be also produced at the facility.

In line with the company’s intention for sustainable practices, Hilmar Cheese Company has adopted the US Dairy Stewardship Commitment and goal to achieve a net-zero dairy industry by 2050. The new facility in Kansas will be a prominent company’s showcase as a sustainable solution for the dairy industry.

“One of the biggest advantages for both Hilmar Cheese Company and Dodge City is the cohesive nature of our sustainability efforts,” said Nick Hernandez, city manager. “They have a standing commitment to being stewards of the environment, much like Dodge City, and through this mutually beneficial partnership, we will be able to further utilise our wastewater for crop irrigation and biogas production.”

The new cheese and whey protein processing facility by Hilmar Cheese Company is estimated to create almost 250 new jobs with $460 million in capital investment. By late 2023, the company expects to increase a further $550 million in capital investment and brings another 750 new jobs within a 50-mile radius of Dodge City.
