In August 2022, IRENA released its overview of the state of bioenergy uptake. We take a closer look at the report in the context of biomethane and biogas, particularly in Europe as well as introduce some of the fundamentals around biomethane in the US.

Bioenergy by far comprises the largest share of renewable energy worldwide, with much of this usage associated with cooking and heating. However, uptake for higher value usage (electricity, transport) is relatively low. Furthermore, concerns regarding the sustainability of harvesting biomass (largely associated with indirect land usage change, or ILUC) continue to loom large.
