The French National Assembly has approved government plans to close the country’s remaining four coal-fired plants by 2022, during the review of the energy bill and climate on Thursday.
The measure, adopted by 48 votes and 5 abstentions, provides for a decree to cap greenhouse gas emissions emitted by fossil fuel power plants, so as to ensure coal plants were forced out of the market. Energy minister Francois de Rugy had said earlier this year that such a measure was necessary to prevent operators from opposing closures.
