Facebook first made a commitment in 2015 to reach 50% renewables by 2018. That target was reached a year early, with 51% energy sourced from renewables in 2017.

In a blog post published yesterday (28th of August), Facebook has committed to 100% renewable energy and to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by the end of 2020.

Facebook is one of the largest buyers of long-term PPAs, with contracts for over 3 GW of new solar and wind [2].

Critics, however, point out that Facebook is lagging behind tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft who already purchase enough renewable energy to cover their entire global power consumption.

According to Statista, Facebook consumed 2.5 TWh electricity globally in 2017.
