RED II update: Deal on 32% renewable energy target

Early this morning an agreement was made on a legally binding EU-wide target of 32% renewable energy share by 2030 with an upwards revision by 2023 [1]. The target for renewable energy in transport has been set at 14% to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles.

Also part of the transport objective, the European Parliament managed to push for an agreement to phase out palm oil by 2030 and freeze existing quantities of imports according to Claude Turmes, a Luxembourg MEP[2]. The deal also includes restrictions on first and second-generation biofuels.

Another interesting milestone is the agreement related to renewable energy self-consumption which primarily covers solar photovoltaics. Installations of 25 kW will be exempted from grid charges.
