Renewable energy prospects for the European Union

IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency published their report “Renewable Energy Prospects for the European Union”. The report is based on the REmap EU study conducted in collaboration with the European Commission.

The aim of the study was to “identify cost-effective renewable options across Member States, sectors, and technologies, in order to meet – and potentially exceed – the proposed 27% renewables target for 2030” [1]. The report outlines how an accelerated scenario, the REmap case can lead to cost-savings compared to a Reference Case which is based on national energy plans.

The additional renewable options identified in the REmap case can be broadly split into three categories:
