Tuesday 22 January, the Climate Group published a report about the RE100 association and progress made the last year. RE100 consists now of 122 companies, located on six continents, who have made a commitment to go 100% renewable, an increase of 35 companies compared to January last year. Their total electricity consumption was 159 TWh, and if RE100 was a country, it would be 24th biggest in the world in terms of electricity use. This was an increase of 52 TWh compared to last year, equivalent to 49%.
Most of the RE100 companies are localized in Europe and North-America. However, we also see growth elsewhere, and especially Asia. One bottleneck in Asia is that green certificates tracking renewable electricity are not widespread. However, this is about to change. Last year, China introduced their own certificate system, and South Korea is about to initiate a pilot project this year. This will e.g. help companies like Samsung to turn to renewable electricity.
