The result of the vote was welcomed by utility interests; Ingbert Liebing, managing director of Germany's VKU, called it "an important sign of the role of natural gas as a bridge to achieving climate goals." The decision was predictably criticised by climate and environmental groups.
On a regional level, the vote result resonated with member states where gas/nuclear forms a large share of the energy mix including Slovakia and France. Luxembourg and Austria however, were opposed to the extent that they said they would challenge the law in court.
While the Council can object to the move by 11 July 2022, it seems unlikely as this will require a 20 of 27 member majority to do so. After this date, the Act will come into force and apply by 1 January 2023.
