Offshore wind proves cost saving due to technological innovation and collaboration across sectors, and costs are expected to continue to fall over the next decade.
The Offshore Wind Programme Board (OWPB), which manages the UK seabed, is optimistic about offshore wind energy’s future; the early achievement of the cost reduction, four years before the 2020 government reduction goal, proves its role in the UK energy future.
According to OWPB, the cost of offshore wind energy fell to £97 per MWh in 2015/16, lower than the 2020 goal of £100, and a 32% reduction from £142 per MWh, which was the cost in 2010/11.
