Nearly 22 million people living in Beijing are suffering from smog. In 2015, the city issued its highest alert for air pollution, close to hazardous threshold.

Beijing aims to reduce the annual average particle pollution from 73 micrograms per cubic meter to 60, according to the Municipal Reform and Development Commission.
