Opportunities for AD and biomethane in IPCC call to urgent climate action

Last week (9 August 2021), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), essentially the most up-to-date understanding of climate systems and change. The importance of reducing of methane emissions to combat global warming was highlighted in the report. The World Biogas Association (WBA) released a response to AR6 discussed below.

Biogas and biomethane (upgraded biogas) are both renewable energy gas carriers, and Anaerobic Digestion (AD - the technology often used to produce biogas) is able to sequester methane emissions from decomposing organic matter, for example from waste landfill sites. As such, these green gases are likely to play a key role in combatting methane and carbon emissions.
