Due to generous incentives in the last six years, the Romanian electricity system has experienced a fast development of renewable energy resources from zero in 2010 to nearly 5,5 MW in November 2016: 3,247 MW wind farm capacity, 1,812 MW solar plant capacity, 336 MW hydroelectric power stations and some 135 MW biomass installations, according to data from Transelectrica.

The European Commission approved in July 2011 the Romanian green certificate support system for promoting electricity from renewable energy sources.
