Amazon has made an announcement to power its operations worldwide with renewable energy via a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The retail giant plans to purchase a total corresponding amount of 3.4 GW solar and wind capacity. This makes Amazon the world largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy.
In the United state, ACCIONA will provide solar energy to Amazon with a total production capacity of 641 MW. To fulfil the contract, the company will build four new photovoltaic plants in Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. " These four new projects with ACCIONA help us toward our goal of powering our operations with 100% renewable energy,” said Nat Sahlstrom, Director, Amazon Energy.
In the other announcement, Amazon has made a 10-year corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with Ørsted, the Danish wind power supplier, to offtake 250 MW of the production from Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in Germany. The agreement with the retail giant is the second CPPA for Ørsted, after the first agreement on the 253 MW Onshore Wind Farm Texas in Scurry County, Texas in 2016.
In total, Amazon has 127 renewable energy projects globally, including 59 utility-scale wind and solar renewable energy projects and 68 solar rooftops on fulfilment centres and sort centres around the globe. The 26 new wind and solar energy projects, following the recent announcement, are located in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S.
