Inauguration of Europe’s highest wind farm in the Swiss Alps

Europe’s highest wind farm in Swiss Alps was officially inaugurated in September 2016. Located at an altitude of 2465 m the wind farm comprises four turbines, producing 10 GWh electricity annually. The blades have a diameter of 92 m and have been transported with special-purpose vehicles from Germany to Switzerland. The wind farm was developed at a cost of 20 million CHF (around 18.3 million Euros). In 2014 the majority shareholder SwissWinds signed an agreement with the environmental organisation WWF Oberwallis to protect birds and bats around the wind farm. For this purpose, the turbines are switched off during periods of bat migration.
