In the first eight months of 2016, Spain almost achieved a share of 50% renewables in total electricity generation. Wind and hydro energy, with 21.8% and 17.8% respectively, contributed the most to the renewable share. With over 23 GW installed, Spain has the second highest installed wind power capacity in Europe. However, when it comes to interconnector capacity, the country faces problems. As Spain’s generation regularly exceeds the actual demand, the ability to export its electricity to neighbouring countries is essential to further the growth of renewables. Spain’s interconnection capacity is only around 4% of the total installed capacity. Yet, the country is working to reach the goal of 10% share of interconnector capacity by 2020, set by the European Council.
