According to the continent’s two transmission system operator (TSO) organisations, Europe would need in order of 500 TWh of renewable energy per year to produce all the green hydrogen it will need by 2050, which would present a major opportunity for additional renewables capacity.
Hydrogen in seen as a key fuel in the energy transition as it can be used to generate heat and electricity with zero emissions, and can be used for energy storage as well as transport. In addition, hydrogen is used in the manufacture of many chemicals including fertilisers.
