The Netherlands has been negotiating with other EU countries about buying sustainable energy rights to help it meet targets, the Economic Affairs and Climate ministry has confirmed to NOS.
EU’s 2020 target for the Netherlands is 14% of gross final energy consumption to come from renewable sources. But the Netherlands has fallen way behind, having RES share of just 6.6% in 2017 and achieving 14% by this year end looks rather impossible. By buying rights from countries with a surplus, the Netherlands prevents sanctions from the European Union.
