Dong Energy, a Danish energy company, is currently installing the world’s largest wind turbines in Liverpool Bay off the coast of Britain. A total of 32 wind turbines will be installed as part of an extension of the already existing Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm. The turbines are made by the Danish company MHI Vestas and each of them has a nameplate capacity of 8 MW and a rotor diameter of 164 m. Large turbines are favored over smaller ones as overall cost per MWh electricity can be reduced due to lower installation and maintenance costs. The blades of the turbines have been manufactured on the Isle of Wight and assembled in Belfast. The windfarm has an expected lifetime of 25 years.
