Costa Rica ran entirely on renewable electricity for at least 76 consecutive days between June and August in 2016. Even in 2015, the small country obtained 99% of its electricity from renewable sources. Costa Rica benefits from its geographic location: having a high concentration of rivers per capita, along with an undulating topography allowing it to source 80% of the country’s electricity from hydropower.
