On 30 November 2016, the European Commission presented a proposal for a recast of the directive on the promotion of renewable energy sources, as part of the broader 'Clean Energy for all Europeans' package (hereafter referred to as RED II). The main purpose of the recast RES directive is to increase the share of RES in the EU energy mix to at least 27 % by 2030 (a goal set by the European Council in October 2014) and take measures to ensure that the EU becomes the world leader in renewable energy. RED II will cover the period 2021 to 2030.
