Sweden to take over the Presidency of the European Council

From 1 January to 30 June 2023, Sweden will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, following the half-year Czech Presidency, and will lead the work in the Council during the following six months. It means that the Swedes will play a central role in setting and progressing the European bloc’s agenda. This week, the upcoming Swedish Presidency unveiled its working programme, part of which focusses on accelerating the climate transition.

Context

The Presidency of the Council is on a six-month rotating basis, whereby during half a year, the Presidency steers the Council’s work on EU legislation. The two main tasks on the Presidency are to plan and chair the meetings of the Council and its preparatory bodies and to represent the Council in its relations with other EU institutions.
