This week, after the annual State of Union address, the European Parliament voted in favour of a 45% target for RE in the EU’s gross final energy consumption by 2030. This goal is higher than the one endorsed by the European Commission in June, which stood at 40%. The previous decision did not consider the Commission’s REPowerEU Communication, that was a direct response to the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This development represents a departure from the current binding target, adopted in 2018, of 32% of renewable energy by 2030 and Europe’s growing ambition to accelerate energy transition, tapping into the renewables potential.
