Germany’s new regional certificates

With the amendment of the Renewable Energy Act (EEG 2017, taking effect on 1st January 2017, please see also this article) the UBA (“Umweltbundesamt”) will be able to issue regional certificates (“Regionalnachweise”) for supported electricity that is marketed directly (i.e. electricity that receives a market premium). The UBA will also be responsible for transfer and cancellation of regional certificates and to create a register for the regional certificates (the register for the regional certificates will be operated in the same data bank as the German register for GOs, the HKNR).
