Enel and Eni to build 20 MW pilot green hydrogen project

Thursday, 03 December 2020

Italian based energy titans, Enel and Eni, have teamed up to install 20 MW of hydrogen capacity, to be commissioned before 2023.

The capacity will come in the form of two 10 MW electrolysers to be installed at Eni refineries. Green hydrogen is believed to be the most impactful decarbonisation option for refineries, and should be a boon for the oil supermajor.

In addition, Eni has invested heavily in Solar PV technology, with a pipeline of project amounting to 220 MW PV capacity slated to be completed around 2021.

Not to be outdone, Enel is working on many hydrogen projects worldwide, including in Chile and the US, with the aim of installing 2 GW total hydrogen capacity by 2030.

The announcement by the two companies comes on the heels of the Italian government's energy strategy released in November 2020 to have 5 GW electrolyser capacity installed in the Mediterranean nation by 2030.

This is in line with the overarching European Commission hydrogen strategy, revealed in August 2020, which aims to have 40 GW of electrolyers installed by 2030.
