German publication, Welt, has published an interview about the greening of the steel industry with a representative from Salzgitter AS - one of the largest steel producers in Europe.

Highlights include:

  • The German steel industry is responsible for approximately 57 million tonnes per annum CO2 emissions, despite advances in energy efficiency (95%).
  • Changing from blast furnace technology to hydrogen technology (via Direct Reduced Iron, or DRI) has the potential to decrease emissions to 5% of current values.
