Key highlights:
In the latest AIB statistics for 2020, there continues to be an oversupply of GOs in the market with supply (issuances) at 761.8 TWh while demand (cancellations) stood at 735 TWh. When compared to 2019 figures, the supply of GOs in the market in 2020 increased by over 17% while the demand grew by 8% showing a growing appetite for the certificates. It is worth noting that cancellation growth was larger between 2018-2019. GO expiries in 2020 were down by 24% when compared to 2019 figures.
Monthly RES-GO transaction issuance in the AIB
Between January-March GO issuances usually peak due to disclosure deadlines for many AIB member countries being in March. After March 2020, GO issuances began to decrease with the August 2020 total 54% lower when compared to January. For the most part, the monthly GO supply in 2020 was higher when compared to 2019 and 2018 except between June-July where issuance lower when compared to the same period in 2019 and 2018.
Monthly RES-GO transaction cancellations in the AIB
The highest demand peak for GOs was in March and this is mostly attributed to disclosure deadlines falling the same month. From April to August 2020, monthly GO cancellations began to decrease which has been the historic trend. However, when compared to the previous year, monthly cancellations in 2020 were higher except in July where cancellations significantly decreased (27% compared to 2019).
A further breakdown of the recent AIB statistics in terms of key countries and technology and more will follow soon.
