The four Nordic Transmission System Operators (TSOs) will collaborate to prepare a Nordic Grid Development Perspective (NGDP) for release in 2021. This follows on from the previous report released in 2019.
Last year's report focused on development of the Nordic electricity grids with an eye to 2040. The outlook for five 'Nordic corridors' - Norway/Denmark, Norway/Sweden, Norway/Finland, Finland/Sweden and Denmark/Sweden was discussed in greater detail.
The 2021 report, expected to be released in the third quarter of next year will delve into the growing influence of wind installations (both onshore and offshore) as well as north-south power transfer and resource adequacy. The growing influence of climate change effecting solutions, as well as sector coupling offering further options to decarbonisation will also be presented.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Outlook (WEO) released last week highlighted the importance of strengthen grids to support expanding renewables electricity generation; the NGDP will provide more detail on the Nordic way forward to grid security. Similar to the WEO, the NGDP will consider a base scenario - 'Climate neutral Nordics', showing the path to a decarbonised Nordic system.
